Mrs Marie Bernadette Marie Louise Celebrates 100 Years of Life and Resilience

Mrs Marie Bernadette Marie Louise officially joined the elite club of Mauritian centenarians on Sunday 11 October 2026, celebrating her 100th birthday in Gokhoola, Piton, surrounded by family, friends, and dignitaries.

Born on 6 October 1926 in Grand Gaube, Mrs Marie Louise’s milestone was marked with an official celebration attended by the Minister of Tertiary Education, Science and Research, Dr Kaviraj Sharma Sukon.

To honour her exceptional longevity, the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity presented Mrs Marie Louise with a ceremonial bouquet, a centenarian medal, an official certificate, a suit quilt, a blender, and a cheque of Rs 26,203. The National Solidarity Fund further recognised the occasion with a cheque of Rs 10,000, alongside special gifts presented by the Senior Citizens Council. Additionally, Mauritius Telecom paid tribute to the centenarian by equipping her with a Special Telephone Service.

Mrs Marie Louise’s father, Mr Louis Orphee Marie Louise, worked as a blacksmith at the Mon Songe Sugar Estate, while her mother managed the household. She was the twelfth of fourteen siblings, all of whom have since passed away.

After completing her primary education up to Standard Four, she later moved to L’Amitié, where she lived in a free union partnership with Mr Josue Raya until his passing in 1987. The couple was blessed with one son, Mr Jacques Josue, a former mechanic at the Mont Loisir Sugar Estate, who passed away in 2019. Since then, the centenarian has been living with her daughter-in-law, Mrs Marie Ginette Raya.

The centenarian attributes her longevity to a lifetime of hard work, the unwavering support and care of her loved ones, and her unconditional faith in God.
