World Mental Health Day: Promoting well-being among detainees through yoga

Thirty-six detainees participated in a yoga session held, today at the Petit Verger Rehabilitation and Reintegration Centre in Pointe aux Sables organised in the context of World Mental Health Day 2026. The session was conducted by Abhyas (School of Yoga) and aimed at promoting mental well-being through the practice of yoga.

This initiative underscores the importance of mental health as an integral component of overall health and well-being. It also serves as an opportunity for detainees to discover how yoga can help promote relaxation, mindfulness and emotional balance, while offering practical techniques to cope with stress and anxiety.

Through guided movements, breathing exercises and relaxation techniques, the participants were encouraged to focus on the connection between the mind and body. Such practices can help individuals develop greater self-awareness, improve concentration and cultivate a sense of calm. Several studies have highlighted the benefits of regular yoga practice, meditation and breathing techniques in managing stress, regulating emotions, promoting mental calmness, improving physical flexibility and supporting overall well-being.

The organisation of this session reflects the importance of providing detainees with opportunities to engage in activities that support their psychological and emotional well-being. Life in detention can present various challenges, making access to appropriate support and positive coping strategies particularly important. Initiatives promoting mental health contribute to create a more supportive environment and encourage individuals to take an active role in their personal development.

The yoga session also underscored the role of rehabilitation programmes in addressing not only the behavioural and social aspects of reintegration, but also the mental and emotional needs of detainees. By introducing participants to practices that can be incorporated into their daily lives, the session sought to encourage healthier habits and promote a more positive approach to personal well-being.

World Mental Health Day serves as an important reminder that mental health deserves attention, understanding and support in all settings. Initiatives such as this yoga session contribute to raising awareness of the importance of psychological well-being and reaffirm the value of rehabilitation efforts that place human development and successful reintegration into society.
