New Trauma and Emergency Unit opens at Victoria Hospital
The new Trauma and Emergency Unit at Victoria Hospital, Candos, introducing a modern triage system for faster and more effective emergency care, was inaugurated yesterday by the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo.
The Junior Minister, Mrs Anishta Babooram, senior health officials, doctors and other personalities were present.
The new facility will enable patients requiring urgent intervention, including those involved in accidents or suffering from heart attacks or strokes, to receive immediate attention. A colour-coded triage system will be used to prioritise critical cases over patients requiring routine care.
In a statement, Minister Bachoo emphasised that the implementation of trauma and emergency units across the country’s main hospitals marks a major milestone in the transformation and modernisation of healthcare services. The initiative addresses longstanding concerns over waiting times in emergency departments and aims to reduce preventable deaths resulting from delays in treatment, he added.
He moreover recalled budgetary measures for the creation of specialised clinical zones, including dedicated trauma, emergency and stroke units. These facilities, he indicated, are intended to separate acute stroke and critical trauma cases from routine outpatient traffic, enabling patients to receive timely care according to their specific needs.
Speaking about preventive measures against diabetes, Minister Bachoo said that Government is also setting up dedicated diabetes wards in hospitals. He pointed out that more than 600 amputations are carried out annually due to diabetes-related complications, adding that greater awareness, prevention and early intervention are essential to reducing this figure.
The Minister further announced measures to improve emergency services, including the acquisition of additional ambulances and the recruitment of some 26 SAMU emergency physicians. These measures are expected to help save lives, improve patient outcomes and increase the capacity of emergency services to respond to more people.
He referred to a new service at Victoria Hospital to improve the monitoring of patients who have undergone pacemaker implantation. Through an application installed on the patient’s mobile phone, relevant information will be transmitted to the hospital’s system, enabling healthcare professionals to monitor patients more effectively.
According to him, these measures are being implemented in line with Government’s vision to protect and safeguard lives and ensure that every citizen has access to timely, specialised and quality healthcare services.
