Online safety: Mauritian Government and Meta explore stronger digital safeguards

A team from Meta, owner of the social media platforms WhatsApp and Facebook, is in Mauritius for a two-day visit from 06 to 07 October 2026, during which working sessions are being held with different stakeholders on online safety and issues specific to the local digital environment.

The discussions are focusing on the liability of persons posting undesired content, the requirement for online platforms to have local representation in Mauritius, and content moderation, including capacity building to review and address content in Mauritian Creole. They are also addressing age assurance and the protection of children, including cut-off hours, as well as amendments being brought to the Cybersecurity and Cybercrime Act 2021.

Other areas of focus include the fast-track management of takedown requests, verifiable identities, support to the police for criminal investigations, and Meta’s Trusted Partner Programme, through which the company works with local organisations capable of identifying and escalating problematic content.

In addition, the Ministry of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation and Meta are discussing a Framework Agreement setting out proposed areas of cooperation between the Mauritian Government and Meta. The aim is to strengthen the online safety environment and address issues specific to the Mauritian context.
