HEC holds national consultation on AI Governance in Higher Education

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) convened a National Consultation Workshop on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance in Higher Education, yesterday in Ebene. Organised in the context of implementing the landmark Higher Education (Use of Artificial Intelligence) Regulations 2026, the workshop provided a vital national platform for key stakeholders to share their insights, views, and recommendations.

The outcomes and strategic recommendations gathered during this consultative session will directly inform the preparation of the upcoming National AI Governance Framework and its accompanying operational guidelines.

The event was marked by the presence of several high-level dignitaries, including the Minister of Tertiary Education, Science and Research, Dr Kaviraj Sharma Sukon; the Commissioner of the HEC, Professor (Dr) Romeela Mohee; and the Chairperson of the HEC, Dr Ashveen Kumar Kissoonah.

In a statement, Minister Sukon underlined that AI is already integrated into our higher education institutions and that the focus must now turn to building the frameworks to enable students, academics, and researchers to leverage it effectively.

Noting that students possess different learning pathways and capabilities, the Minister averred that AI must be harnessed to identify their unique strengths and weaknesses, and consequently deliver the targeted materials they need to bridge performance gaps. This approach directly aligns with the personalised learning model we endeavour to promote across the education sector, he emphasised.

Dr Sukon also underscored the need to train educators and academics to integrate AI tools into their teaching methodologies while actively exposing students to these technologies.

As regards developing effective guidelines, the Minister suggested that the HEC establishes a dedicated committee to keep pace with the dynamic nature of AI. He further proposed that this body meets every three to six months to continuously update institutional guidelines in a bid to match the latest technological breakthroughs.
