Plaza Theatre restoration progresses with focus on Heritage Preservation
Renovation works at the historic Plaza Theatre are progressing towards completion in September 2027, with Government and Municipal Authorities closely monitoring the project to ensure that this landmark cultural venue is restored while preserving its architectural and heritage character.
The Minister of Local Government, Mr Ranjiv Woochit, made this statement yesterday following a site visit at the Plaza Theatre in Rose Hill to assess progress achieved and identify any challenges. He was accompanied by the Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Mahendra Gondeea; the Mayor of Beau Bassin–Rose Hill, Mr André Toussaint; the Project Consultant, Mr Hans Dwarka; and other personalities.
He highlighted that works are generally progressing satisfactorily despite some delays encountered. He pointed out that several components of the project are being undertaken in parallel, including electrical, plumbing and waterproofing works, with a view to making up for delays.
Moreover, Minister Woochit expressed confidence that the works can be completed within the prescribed timeframe.
For his part, Minister Gondeea welcomed the progress achieved and outlined the scale and importance of this undertaking. He commended the Municipal Council, its technical team and all stakeholders involved in the restoration project.
Mr Gondeea emphasised that the renovated Plaza Theatre will provide artists with an appropriate venue to perform and showcase their talents. He expressed hope that, upon completion of the works, the theatre will regain its prominent place in the country's artistic and cultural landscape.
The Mayor of Beau Bassin–Rose Hill, for his part, stated that despite challenges which had slowed down some works, other components were being undertaken concurrently to maintain progress. He also underlined the involvement of theatre practitioners in discussions on the future use of the venue.
As for Mr Dwarka, he explained that the restoration is particularly complex owing to the historic nature of the building. He cited termite infestation among the challenges encountered and stressed the importance of preserving the Plaza's original woodwork, architectural features and acoustics.
Phase III of the renovation project, being implemented by the Municipal Council of Beau Bassin–Rose Hill, started on 09 March 2026. The contract, awarded to Tianli Construction Company Ltd, amounts to some Rs 222.55 million, excluding VAT, including a Rs 13 million contingency sum.
