The Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo, effected a site visit today at the Bruno Cheong Medical Centre, Flacq to take stock of progress of upgrading works for the setting up of a Residential Rehabilitation Centre for persons affected by substance abuse.

The Minister was accompanied by the Chairperson of the National Agency for Drug Control (NADC), Mrs Nadia Peerun and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Kunal Naik, along with health personnel and officers of the Ministry.

In his address, Minister Bachoo highlighted that the Centre will provide a dedicated therapeutic environment for persons affected by substance abuse, particularly young people, through an intensive residential programme focusing on behavioural modification, life skills development and psychological recovery.

He indicated that the existing Intensive Care Unit will be converted into a rehabilitation centre to increase the capacity to accommodate more patients and announced that the Rehabilitation Centre for children at Long Mountain will undergo renovation works to enhance its facilities so as to enable it to cater for more beneficiaries.

Minister Bachoo also acknowledged the contribution of Non-Governmental Organisations in supporting victims of substance abuse and called on major organisations to strengthen their support towards treatment, rehabilitation and reintegration efforts. He added that Government will identify additional sites to set up rehabilitation centres across the country to strengthen the national response to substance abuse.

For his part, Mr Kunal Naik emphasised the importance of adopting a holistic approach to addressing substance abuse and supporting the rehabilitation of affected persons. He highlighted that the NADC is implementing a range of measures to coordinate and facilitate national efforts aimed at preventing substance abuse and strengthening treatment and rehabilitation services.
