Mauritius supports regional strategy on plastic pollution

Mauritius will support the adoption of the Nairobi Convention’s Regional Strategy on Plastic Pollution and Associated Chemicals in the Western Indian Ocean, 2027–2037, following Cabinet’s approval.

The Strategy will be tabled for discussion and adoption at the 12th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP12) to the Nairobi Convention, scheduled to be held in October 2026 in Tanzania.

The Strategy is structured around five strategic pillars aimed at addressing plastic pollution across the region. These include: preventing and reducing plastic pollution at source; transforming plastic product design and promoting safer and circular plastics; scaling up reuse, refill and viable circular alternatives; strengthening environmentally sound waste management and leakage prevention, including Extended Producer Responsibility; and addressing sea-based sources of plastic pollution.

The Strategy will harmonise regional approaches and standards and facilitate access to technical assistance, capacity building and financing opportunities. It will also contribute to the protection of the marine and coastal environment in the Western Indian Ocean.
