Mauritius and Egypt explore Capacity-Building Cooperation
The Ambassador of the Arab
Republic of Egypt to Mauritius, Mrs Abir Alam Eldin, paid a courtesy call,
today in Port Louis, on the Minister of Public Service and Administrative
Reforms, Mr Lutchmanah Pentiah.
In a statement following the meeting, Minister Pentiah described the bilateral relations between Mauritius and Egypt as friendly and productive. He recalled that during the Ambassador’s first meeting with him, discussions focused on opportunities for capacity building and training for Mauritian public officers.
According to the Minister, Egypt subsequently offered a number of training courses to Mauritian officers. However, these opportunities could not be taken up due to concerns arising from the conflict in the Middle East. Issues relating to risk factors and liability, as well as the need for clearances from the relevant Ministries, prevented officers from travelling to Egypt.
Minister Pentiah noted that Mauritius had consequently missed out on around 20 to 30 training opportunities, which would have been fully funded by the host country.
Discussions during the courtesy call also focused on the finalisation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Mauritius and Egypt to formalise cooperation in the field of capacity building, both in the short and long term.
The Minister further highlighted the possibility of having Egyptian experts travel to Mauritius to conduct training programmes for public officers, particularly in cases where travelling to Egypt remains difficult. He expressed the wish for two or three Egyptian experts in public administration to come to Mauritius as resource persons and deliver capacity-building programmes at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Public Service and Innovation.
Such an arrangement, he observed, would enable Mauritius to benefit from the expertise and training opportunities offered by Egypt while addressing current concerns related to travel amid the regional situation.
Minister Pentiah also welcomed the Ambassador’s interest in participating in this year’s Civil Service Kermesse, noting that the event would provide another opportunity to strengthen people-to-people and bilateral ties between Mauritius and Egypt.
