Mauritius and China reaffirm commitment to deepen strategic partnership
Mauritius and China reaffirmed their longstanding ties of friendship and cooperation, as well as their commitment to further deepen their strategic partnership, yesterday at a reception hosted by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Mauritius, Dr Huang Shifang, at the Hennessy Park Hotel in Ebène to mark the 77th anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China.
The President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Dharam Gokhool; the Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Marie Arianne Navarre-Marie; the Vice-President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Jean Robert Yvan Hungley; and the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Dr Arvin Boolell, were among the dignitaries present. Several Ministers, Junior Ministers, Members of the National Assembly and other personalities also attended the reception.
Toasts were raised by the dignitaries to mark the occasion and reaffirm the strong and enduring bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
In her address, Ambassador Shifang reflected on China’s economic and social transformation over the past 77 years, with emphasis on high-quality development, innovation and the green transition. She noted the growing contribution of high-end manufacturing, the digital economy and emerging technologies, as well as China’s efforts to expand international trade and share development opportunities with countries around the world.
Dr Shifang also reaffirmed China’s commitment to multilateralism and cooperation in addressing global challenges. She outlined China’s initiatives in development, security, civilisation and global governance, and referred to its growing engagement in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence and ocean governance. In this context, she underscored the importance of China-Africa cooperation and solidarity among developing countries.
Against this backdrop, the Ambassador turned to the longstanding relations between Mauritius and China, noting that the two countries will mark the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations next year. She recalled the elevation of bilateral ties to a strategic partnership in 2024 and the expansion of cooperation in trade, renewable energy, healthcare, infrastructure, human resource development and people-to-people exchanges. She also pointed to the China-Mauritius Free Trade Agreement and China’s zero-tariff policy for African countries as opportunities to further increase Mauritian exports to the Chinese market.
Looking ahead, Dr Shifang expressed China’s readiness to further deepen the strategic partnership with Mauritius and align China’s 15th Five-Year Plan with Mauritius’ Vision 2050. She also identified the Belt and Road Initiative and China’s global initiatives as areas for further cooperation, with the aim of advancing shared development and bringing greater benefits to the peoples of both countries.
