Angelo Sossou Heritage Foundation launched with tree-planting initiative

A tree-planting ceremony was held on Sunday 27 September 2026 at the Grande Rivière Nord Ouest Peri-Urban Social Forest to commemorate the launch of the Angelo Sossou Heritage Foundation and honour the memory of the late Mr Angelo Sossou. An ‘Ochna mauritiana’ tree was planted in his memory as a lasting gesture of remembrance.

Organised by the Angelo Sossou Heritage Foundation in collaboration with the Forestry Service of the Ministry of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, the ceremony was held in the presence of the Junior Minister, Mr Gilles Fabrice David, and other personalities.

The initiative also sought to promote environmental stewardship among the Pointe aux Sables community and contribute to strengthening resilience to climate change through tree planting and the enhancement of green spaces.

In his address, Junior Minister David highlighted the Forestry Service’s ongoing efforts to undertake replanting, green public spaces and promote environmental protection as an important part of sustainable development. He noted that the initiative was particularly meaningful as it combined these efforts with the remembrance of the late Mr Angelo Sossou.

The Junior Minister paid tribute to Mr Angelo Sossou and recalled his qualities as a sportsman, musician and engaged young person. He also expressed his sympathy to the family and acknowledged the profound pain of losing a child at such a young age.

Referring to the planting of the endemic tree as a symbol of hope, Mr David said that the gesture not only honoured the memory of Mr Angelo Sossou but also reflected a commitment to preserving the environment for future generations. He commended the Foundation for turning remembrance into a meaningful environmental initiative and expressed his support for its work.
