Mrs Marthe Andrea Nagloo reaches remarkable milestone of 100 Years
Mrs
Marthe Andrea Nagloo, born on 26 September 1926, has attained the remarkable age
of 100 years. The centenarian celebrated her birthday in presence of her family and relatives, during a ceremony held
yesterday at the Municipality of Curepipe.
On this occasion, Mrs Nagloo was honoured with tokens of appreciation, including a cheque of Rs 26,203, a microwave, a bouquet of flowers, a centenarian medal, and a certificate. In addition, the National Solidarity Fund awarded her a cheque of Rs 10,000 and the Senior Citizens Council paid tribute to her longevity with a special commemorative gift.
Born at Eau Coulée, the centenarian, affectionately known as “Matante”, is the daughter of the late Mr Azor George Julius, a labourer, and the late Mrs Loeillet Julia, a housewife. She was one of four children, comprising one son and three daughters, and is now the sole surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs Nagloo attended school up to Standard III. During her younger years, she worked as a maid for different employers. She was civilly married to the late Mr Joseph Robert Nagloo, who worked as a woodcutter. The couple lived in Eau Coulée, where they raised their family. Her husband passed away approximately 40 years ago.
The centenarian was blessed with five children, comprising two daughters and three sons. Today, Mr Louis Raymond Nagloo is the only surviving child. A tailor by profession, he currently lives with his mother and provides her with support and care. Mrs Nagloo is also the proud grandmother of two grandchildren and great-grandmother of three great-grandchildren.
Throughout her life, she has maintained an appreciation for traditional Mauritian cuisine. She is non-vegetarian and particularly enjoys chicken curry accompanied by vegetables.
At the age of 100, the centenarian experiences age-related debility. She is wheelchair-bound and is unable to communicate verbally. She remains under regular medical supervision and receives monthly visits from her treating physician, Dr Butonkee, of the Ministry of Health and Wellness.
Mrs Nagloo attributes her long life to hard work, a hygienic lifestyle and unwavering faith in God.
