New Chemin Grenier Market Fair inaugurated

The new Chemin Grenier Market Fair was inaugurated on 25 September 2026 at Toocaram Lane, providing traders and consumers with a modern environment for commercial activities.

The Minister of National Infrastructure, Mr Govindranath Gunness; the Minister of Local Government, Mr Ranjiv Woochit; the Junior Minister of Local Government, Mr Mohammad Fawzi Allymun; Members of Parliament, Messrs Balkrishna Babajee and Shridhur Jugurnauth, and Mrs Marie Véronique Leu-Govind; as well as other personalities were present.

In his address, Minister Gunness highlighted that the new market, representing an investment of around Rs 130 million, will enable traders to operate in better and more hygienic conditions while offering consumers an improved environment to purchase fresh produce. He emphasised the importance of modern market infrastructure in improving hygiene and services to the public.

Mr Gunness urged traders and users to maintain the facility and keep it clean. He also outlined the availability of parking facilities and advocated optimal use of public infrastructure, including for organised community activities when the market is not in use.

Minister Woochit called for cleanliness and responsible use of the market. He indicated that additional drainage works costing nearly Rs 12 million had been required owing to the site's topography, with a view to providing adequate protection against flooding.

He moreover advocated greater use of market infrastructure, including through night-market activities, and indicated that his Ministry is working on harmonising regulations governing markets across Municipalities and District Councils.

Junior Minister Allymun described the market as a valuable asset for Chemin Grenier and stressed the importance of hygiene, cleanliness and adequate ventilation. He also dwelt on the regular monitoring of local projects by the Ministry and relevant authorities.

The Members of Parliament welcomed the completion of the project, underlining improved working conditions for traders and opportunities for entrepreneurship, handicrafts and local economic activities. They encouraged traders, residents and entrepreneurs to make full use of the facility and contribute to its success.
