Lord Neuberger engages with Prime Minister on rule of law and international arbitration

The rule of law and the role of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in Mauritius’ legal and constitutional framework were among the key issues discussed during a courtesy call paid by Lord David Neuberger of Abbotsbury on the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, this afternoon at the Treasury Building in Port Louis.

Lord Neuberger is currently in Mauritius to conduct an international commercial arbitration. He was appointed by the London arbitration centre to conduct the proceedings in Mauritius under the auspices of the Mauritius Arbitration Centre.

In a statement following the meeting, Lord Neuberger said that his presence in Mauritius was also intended to encourage the country’s development as an attractive jurisdiction for international commercial arbitration and litigation. He highlighted Mauritius’ reputation for credibility and integrity, noting that these attributes provide a strong foundation for the country to establish itself as an international centre for commercial arbitration and dispute resolution.

Lord Neuberger’s engagement takes place in the broader context of efforts to strengthen Mauritius’ position as a regional and international centre for commercial arbitration. His current involvement in proceedings being conducted in the country also provides an opportunity to showcase its legal and institutional framework in this field.

Lord David Neuberger of Abbotsbury was born on 10 January 1948 and was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford. Before entering the legal profession, he worked for the merchant bank N. M. Rothschild & Sons. He was called to the Bar in 1974 and became Queen's Counsel in 1987. He subsequently served as a High Court judge in the Chancery Division, a Lord Justice of Appeal and a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary. He was appointed Master of the Rolls in 2009 before succeeding Lord Phillips as President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom in October 2012, a position he held until his retirement in 2017.

Following his retirement, he has remained active in the international legal field, serving as a judge and arbitrator and undertaking appointments in jurisdictions including Singapore and Hong Kong.
