Government strengthens preparedness measures ahead of 2026–2027 rainy season

Government is stepping up preparedness measures ahead of the 2026–2027 rainy season, with emphasis on the timely cleaning of drains and desilting of rivers, enhanced coordination among relevant authorities, and evacuation arrangements in areas at high risk of flooding.

The Minister of National Infrastructure, Mr Govindranath Gunness, made the statement yesterday at the Municipal Council of Port Louis following a Preparedness Plan Meeting for the Rainy Season 2026-2027. The Minister of Local Government, Mr Ranjiv Woochit, and the Junior Minister, Mr Mohammad Fawzi Allymun, were also present.

Minister Gunness highlighted that Rs 125 million has been made available for drain cleaning and river desilting for the current financial year. He urged Local Authorities to accelerate implementation of works, and ensure that works, claims and payments are completed within the financial year.

Furthermore, he recalled that some Rs 222 million were available for drain cleaning and river desilting during financial year 2025–2026, of which only Rs 101 million was utilised. He indicated that additional funding for financial year 2026-2027 can be sought if required, stressing that flood preparedness is essential to safeguard human lives and citizen’s personal belongings.

Mr Gunness moreover observed that 72 locations across the country have been identified as very-high-risk areas. He also underlined the importance of appropriate evacuation arrangements in vulnerable areas and close coordination among the relevant authorities.

For his part, Minister Woochit emphasised the need for drain and river cleaning to be undertaken continuously throughout the year, rather than solely ahead of the rainy season. He urged the public to refrain from dumping waste in drains and rivers, warning that blocked waterways can increase the risk of flooding.

The meeting brought together representatives of the Land Drainage Authority and Local Authorities as well as other stakeholders to review preparedness measures and strengthen coordination ahead of the rainy season.
