PSEA commemorates five decades of private secondary education

The Private Secondary Education Authority (PSEA) celebrated its Golden Jubilee on Monday 21 September 2026, in Beau Bassin, commemorating 50 years of service and its contribution to the development of private secondary education in Mauritius.

The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mr Rajesh Anand Bhagwan; the Minister of National Infrastructure, Mr Govindranath Gunness; the Minister of Education and Human Resource, Dr Mahend Gungapersad; Members of the National Assembly, Messrs Mohamed Reza Saumtally and Chandraprakash Ramkalawon; the Chairperson of PSEA, Dr Deenesh Patpur; and other personalities from the education sector.

The commemorative programme included the launch of a Golden Jubilee pin and e-magazine, the unveiling of a plaque, a tree-planting ceremony and the opening of an art gallery.

The PSEA’s journey dates to 1976, when it was established as the Private Secondary Schools Authority. Operating under the aegis of the Ministry of Education and Human Resource, the Authority is responsible for the regulation and oversight of private secondary education, including the registration and related administrative matters of private secondary schools.

The Authority’s role has evolved over the years through amendments to the PSEA Act, allowing it to respond to the changing needs of the education sector. Its work contributes to maintaining an appropriate regulatory framework for private secondary schools and supporting the continued development of the sector.

Today, the PSEA oversees 110 private secondary schools across Mauritius, Rodrigues and Agalega, catering for approximately 50,000 students. The Golden Jubilee thus marks five decades of the Authority’s role in the regulation and development of private secondary education across the Republic.
