Environmental Awareness: Clean-up campaign launched at Petit Verger Prison

The Commissioner of Prisons, Mr Rashid Ali Beekun, proceeded today with the launch of a clean-up campaign at the Petit Verger Prison with the participation of prison staff and detainees.

This initiative lies in the context of the World Clean Up Day 2026 observed on 20 September and coincides with the nationwide clean up campaign “Operasion Zero Depo” by the Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change.

As part of the initiative, Mr Beekun symbolically planted a tree, alongside the planting of a total of 100 plants within the prison premises. The activity aimed at promoting a clean, green and healthy environment while fostering a sense of responsibility and environmental awareness among participants.

Some 25 prison officers and 60 detainees took part in the clean-up campaign. Their participation contributed to the improvement and beautification of the prison surroundings while promoting a spirit of collaboration between prison staff and detainees.

The Commissioner of Prisons, Mr Beekun, highlighted the importance of involving detainees in constructive and meaningful activities as part of their rehabilitation and reintegration process. He stated that participation in clean-up campaigns helps detainees develop a sense of responsibility, discipline and respect for their surroundings.

According to Mr Beekun, such initiatives also promote teamwork and cooperation between detainees and prison officers, while nurturing a sense of belonging and collective responsibility. Environmental activities, including tree planting and the maintenance of green spaces, provide detainees with practical skills and contribute to establishing a positive and purposeful routine, he said.

In addition to improving the cleanliness and appearance of prison premises, such initiatives help nurture positive attitudes and social skills among detainees, which can be valuable as they prepare to return to their respective families and communities.
