President Gokhool attends Ayurveda Day 2026

The High Commission of India in Mauritius hosted a conference and exhibition this morning, to celebrate Ayurveda Day 2026 centred on the theme “Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow—One Health, One Future”. The event was officially launched by the President of Mauritius, Mr Dharam Gokhool, at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Indian Culture in Phoenix.

Other key dignitaries in attendance included the High Commissioner of India to Mauritius, Mr Anurag Srivastava, and the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Bachoo. The initiative aims to raise awareness about Ayurveda's vital role in preventive healthcare, holistic well-being, and sustainable living.

In his keynote address, President Dharam Gokhool emphasised that health is our greatest wealth, redefining it not merely as the absence of disease, but as a dynamic balance of physical, mental, and social well-being. He underpinned that our understanding of health must extend beyond the treatment of illness, arguing that it must encompass prevention, quality of life, mental and emotional wellbeing and the social and environmental conditions in which people live

The President noted that this comprehensive philosophy directly mirrors the fundamental essence of Ayurveda, a system that addresses the root causes of internal imbalances rather than simply managing surface-level symptoms. He concluded that Ayurveda merits serious, thoughtful attention as an established body of traditional knowledge that offers vital insights into the relationship between lifestyle, diet, environment, and long-term well-being.

As for Minister Bachoo, he underlined the collective responsibility of citizens to prioritise mindful consumption, healthy living, and a strong balance between physical and mental well-being. He highlighted traditional medicine as a vital part of Mauritius’ shared heritage with India, stressing the importance of documenting these practices for future generations.

Furthermore, he recognised India’s valuable assistance in helping Mauritius register local traditional medicines—a major milestone in the sector's development.

The Indian High Commissioner, Mr Anurag Srivastava, described Ayurveda Day as a vital opportunity to raise awareness about Ayurvedic knowledge and promote its responsible use. He pointed out that this year’s theme serves as a reminder that human health is deeply interconnected with the health of the community, other living things, and the environment.

Ayurvedic plants were ceremonially planted by the dignitaries to mark the occasion.
