NCC wards renamed in recognition of Dr Hansa and Dr Maheswarduth Gunesee

The female and male wards at the National Cancer Centre (NCC) in Vacoas were renamed after Dr (Mrs) Hansa Gandhy Gunesee and Dr Maheswarduth Gunesee, respectively, at a ceremony held yesterday afternoon, in recognition of their dedicated service to Mauritius’ health sector and contribution to cancer care.

The Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo; the Junior Minister of Health and Wellness, Mrs Anishta Babooram; the Junior Minister of Local Government, Mr Mohammad Fawzi Allymun; and other personalities were present.

In a statement, Minister Bachoo highlighted the couple’s support to the NCC, including a donation of Rs 25 million towards the acquisition of medical equipment. He recalled that a Memorandum of Understanding formalising the donation was signed in August 2020 and that a Dual Energy Linear Accelerator, used in the treatment of tumours through radiotherapy, was acquired in 2023. The donation covered 80% of the cost of the equipment, with the balance financed by the Ministry of Health and Wellness, he added.

Speaking about their medical careers, Minister Bachoo pointed out that Dr Hansa Gandhy Gunesee was the first dedicated lady gynaecologist employed in Mauritius and served in Rodrigues in 1969, while Dr Maheswarduth Gunesee was an orthopaedic surgeon. The couple served in the health sector for more than 35 years.

Minister Bachoo further described the couple’s commitment to public healthcare as an example of dedicated service and stressed the importance of continued support for cancer care. He noted that Mauritius registers around 250 to 300 new cancer patients each month, underscoring the need for sustained investment in cancer treatment and related services.
