SSR’s 126th Birth Anniversary: Memorial Lecture Celebrates his Enduring Legacy

The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam graced the the 126th Birth Anniversary memorial lecture for Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR), jointly hosted by the Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI) and the Rabindranath Tagore Institute yesterday, at the MGI auditorium in Moka.

University of Mauritius Chancellor, Dr Neerunjun Gopee delivered the memorial lecture detailing SSR's enduring national legacy. The commemorative event brought together the Deputy Prime Minister, Mrs Marie Arianne Navarre-Marie, Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, and members of the diplomatic corps to honour the Founding Father's contributions to the Nation. The ceremony also featured the official launch of "Maati Main Amar Naam," a newly composed MGI tribute song dedicated to SSR's historical impact.

The lecture illuminated the exceptional life, enduring character, and historic legacy of the Father of the Nation, weaving together anecdotes and deep insights to celebrate a leader defined by grandeur of vision, profound humility, and unyielding perseverance.

It traced SSR’s journey from his early life struggles to his academic triumphs, highlighting how his pursuit of education led him to Royal College Curepipe and later to England to study medicine. It evoked the way that his character was uniquely shaped by a lifelong penchant for poetry and early exposure to Hindu scriptures, which provided a moral compass throughout his life.

Dr Neerunjun Gopee illustrated how SSR’s time abroad fostered a deep passion for democratic and socialist values, shaping his lifelong mission to achieve political emancipation through peaceful, evolutionary means. Upon returning to Mauritius, he seamlessly balanced his medical vocation with a fierce political determination to dismantle systemic social and political injustices.

A central theme of the lecture was SSR's ability to unify a deeply fractured landscape and triumph over racially and ethnically charged opposition to lead the nation to independence. Following liberation, he laid the cornerstone of modern Mauritius by establishing a comprehensive welfare state that prioritised free healthcare and education to drive social mobility, building foundational governance architecture, including the Nation's core executive, legal, administrative, and diplomatic institutions and implementing critical socio-economic reforms that successfully prepared the local workforce for its first phase of industrialisation.

The lecture concluded by honouring SSR not just as the great statesman who built a Nation, but as an eternal source of inspiration whose leadership and humanity offer vital lessons for generations to come.
