RESIsland Project to strengthen Mauritius’ climate resilience capacity
Mauritius will strengthen its capacity to manage climate risks, build resilience and improve access to international climate finance under the RESIsland Project, which will be launched on 25 September 2026 at the United Docks in Port Louis.
The project targets African island States that are particularly exposed to the economic and environmental consequences of climate change. These include sea-level rise, coastal erosion, extreme weather events, changing rainfall patterns, water stress and risks to marine and coastal ecosystems.
The RESIsland Project is being implemented by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa in partnership with the African Island States Climate Commission. It covers the nine Member States of the Commission, including Mauritius.
In March 2024, the Green Climate Fund approved a grant of approximately USD 4.95 million for the readiness project, of which USD 250,000 has been allocated to Mauritius.
The project, to be implemented during years 2026 and 2027, is expected to improve institutional coordination between climate adaptation and disaster-risk management and strengthen national technical capacity to assess and manage climate risks.
It also aims to improve climate and disaster-risk information and early-warning and risk-management systems. Furthermore, the project will support the development of a pipeline of bankable climate-resilience projects suitable for financing from the Green Climate Fund and other climate-finance sources.
The initiative is also expected to foster stronger regional cooperation among the nine African Island States through the African Island States Climate Commission.
