Former Singapore Armed Forces Brigadier-General meets Prime Minister on NICE Initiative

The former Brigadier-General of the Singapore Armed Forces, Mr Ong Bong Hwee, paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, today at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis.

In a statement following the meeting, Mr Ong Bong Hwee said his visit to Mauritius was in the context of the National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE), a major Government initiative aimed at instilling discipline, respect, patriotism and social responsibility among the country’s youth.

He expressed his honour and privilege at meeting the Prime Minister, recalling that he had met Dr Ramgoolam 12 years ago at his Office, where the latter had shared his commitment towards the future of the youth of Mauritius. Mr Ong Bong Hwee also highlighted his profound respect for the Prime Minister and the significance he attaches to the NICE initiative.

Mr Ong Bong Hwee indicated that he had also met the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mrs Kan Oye Fong-Weng-Poorun, as well as members of the NICE Steering Committee. He stated that training sessions will be held from 16 to 18 September 2026 for some 20 leaders who will, in turn, train and guide young people under the initiative.

Describing his role as that of an encourager and motivator, Mr Ong Bong Hwee stated he was pleased to have had the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Ramgoolam and commended his commitment to raising awareness among young people while strengthening their resilience and sense of patriotism.
