Food Security: Local Food Production a Priority for Government

With Mauritius currently importing some 300 tonnes of mushrooms, expanding local production could help meet domestic demand, reduce dependence on imports and enable the country to save around Rs 130 million, in line with Government’s agenda to strengthen local food production.

This statement was made yesterday by the Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Dr Arvin Boolell at the inauguration of the Capella Mushroom Farm in Beau Plan.

This initiative is part of various efforts to reduce Mauritius’s reliance on imported mushrooms. Operated by Mushroom Mauritius Ltd, the Farm is expected to contribute to meeting local market demand for fresh mushrooms.

The Junior Minister, Mr Fabrice David, the Director of Mushroom Mauritius Ltd, Mr Arnaud Leclezio and other personalities were also present at the ceremony.

In his address, Dr Boolell described the initiative as a success story reflecting the commitment and efforts invested in the project. The Minister also spoke of the project’s integrated approach, including the use of solar energy to reduce energy costs and the support provided by scientific officers in research and development.

Dr Boolell underpinned the importance of research and development in expanding mushroom production and identifying new opportunities for local agriculture. He called for closer cooperation between the project promoters and scientific officers to improve production and respond to market requirements.

Minister Boolell called upon the promoters to share the knowledge and experience gained through the project with other agricultural operators, while pursuing further opportunities to expand mushroom production locally.

For his part, Junior Minister David highlighted the use of controlled-environment and vertical farming techniques at the facility, enabling mushrooms to be produced in a limited space. He noted that the farm currently produces nearly two tonnes of mushrooms per week, with production expected to increase to meet local demand.

The Junior Minister further assured the company of the continued support of the Ministry, the Food and Agricultural Research and Extension Institute and agricultural services in addressing administrative requirements related to mushroom production.
