WIPO supports Mauritius to advancing Copyright and Creative Empowerment

The Ministry of Arts and Culture hosted a working session, yesterday in Port Louis, with the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Mr Daren Tang. The latter is on a two-day official visit to Mauritius.

The working session gathered key stakeholders of the creative industry and focused on key areas of cooperation and discussion, including copyright protection, creative industries, cultural heritage, digital content, collective rights management and the empowerment of creative entrepreneurs.

In his address, Mr Tang commended Mauritius for its economic transformation from a resource-based economy to a robust, service-oriented model. He noted that Mauritius ranks first in Sub-Saharan Africa and 53rd globally in the Global Innovation Index 2025. While acknowledging that Mauritius already maintains a strong legal framework for intellectual property (IP), Mr Tang urged stakeholders to look beyond traditional compliance and view IP as a dynamic catalyst for opportunity, creativity, and innovation tied directly to local stories, art, music, and heritage.

Highlighting his discussions with the Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Mahendra Gondeea, the WIPO Director-General commended the ongoing work of the Music Author’s Rights Society which is leveraging WIPO's expertise to ensure royalties are collected and distributed transparently and efficiently.

Mr Tang also announced that WIPO’s free knowledge platform, CLIP (Creators Learn IP)—initially designed to guide musicians through the music ecosystem—will now expand to include visual arts.

Concluding his address, Mr Tang stressed that as content and culture become increasingly digital, modernising how Mauritius measures and understands its creative economy is crucial for formulating effective national policies.
