WIPO supports Mauritius in harnessing intellectual property

The role of Intellectual Property (IP) in promoting innovation, investment and enterprise development was at the fore of discussions between the Minister of Industry, SME and Cooperatives, Mr Aadil Ameer Meea, and the Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Mr Daren Tang, during a working session held today in Port Louis.

The meeting took place in the context of Mr Tang’s visit to Mauritius from 10 to 11 September 2026, to explore ways to deepen Mauritius-WIPO cooperation and leverage IP as a strategic instrument for economic transformation, industrial development and export growth.

Minister Ameer Meea commended Mauritius’ longstanding cooperation with WIPO and its support in strengthening the country’s IP legislation, institutions and international framework. He also outlined Government’s Industry Reset and emphasised the need to integrate IP, technology transfer, innovation, branding and commercialisation into the country’s evolving manufacturing strategy.

The discussions identified several areas for further collaboration, including assistance to SMEs and start-ups, technology transfer, regional value chains, IP valuation and financing, geographical indications, export protection and emerging technologies.

In a statement, Mr Tang noted that his visit is the first by a WIPO Director-General to Mauritius and coincides with the 50th anniversary of the country’s membership of the organisation.

He spoke of the growing relevance of IP as Mauritius develops high-tech industries, advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence and digital technologies.

The Director-General of WIPO also underscored the potential of geographical indications, branding and packaging to enhance the competitiveness and international positioning of Mauritian products, while highlighting the opportunities for entrepreneurs, SMEs and start-ups to derive greater commercial value from their intellectual assets.
