Government steps up measures to safeguard public beach access
Safeguarding public access to beaches remains a priority, with ongoing efforts to ensure that access routes are clearly marked, properly maintained and free from obstruction for the benefit of beachgoers.
The Minister of Housing and Lands, Mr Shakeel Ahmed Yousuf Abdul Razack Mohamed, made this statement during a site visit on Tuesday 8 September 2026 to La Preneuse, Tamarin, La Mivoie and surrounding areas. The visit aimed to assess existing beach access routes and verify that these routes remain accessible to the public.
The Minister of Local Government, Mr Ranjiv Woochit; the Junior Minister of Local Government, Mr Mohammad Fawzi Allymun; the Member of Parliament, Mr Balkrishna Babajee; the Chairperson of the District Council of Black River, Mr Kemraz Ortoo; as well as other personalities were present.
In his statement, Minister Mohamed explained that monitoring and mapping exercises carried out by officers of the Ministry of Housing and Lands had helped identify access routes to public beaches. New signs marking these access points would soon be installed, while faded signs would be replaced to make the routes clearly visible and easily identifiable to beachgoers, he announced.
Access routes, stated the Minister, would be maintained in collaboration with the District Council of Black River, which is responsible for their upkeep. He also stressed the importance of properly organising parking facilities around the access points to promote orderly use and prevent congestion. The Minister reiterated that vehicles are not permitted on beaches and called on beach users to respect the relevant access arrangements.
The Ministry of Housing and Lands has made available a web-based mapping platform identifying public beaches and access routes to the sea, Mr Mohamed recalled. In its first phase, the platform covers the coastal areas of La Preneuse, La Mivoie, Tamarin and Flacq, and will be progressively expanded to other coastal regions across Mauritius.
