Mauritius and Saudi Arabia to strengthen cooperation in health sector

Government has agreed to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Health and Wellness of the Republic of Mauritius and the Ministry of Health of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with a view to establishing a cooperative relationship for the development and strengthening of health systems.

The proposed MoU will provide a framework for cooperation between the two countries through the exchange of knowledge and expertise, capacity building, research collaboration and technical cooperation in the fields of primary healthcare, health promotion and community health development.

Cooperation under the MoU will cover key areas including health policy, planning and governance, as well as the strengthening of primary healthcare and the promotion of Universal Health Coverage. Particular emphasis will also be placed on the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases, in line with the need to strengthen preventive and community-based healthcare.

The two countries will further cooperate in pandemic preparedness and emergency health response, with a view to enhancing preparedness and strengthening capacities to respond effectively to public health emergencies.

The MoU will also promote collaboration in digital health, artificial intelligence and health information systems, as well as in medical devices and health technologies, including the possible donation of medical equipment.

Another important area of cooperation will be robotic surgery, which will provide opportunities for knowledge and technical exchange in advanced surgical technologies and contribute to the development of specialised healthcare capabilities.

Through these areas of cooperation, the proposed MoU is expected to strengthen institutional and technical capacities within the health sector, facilitate the sharing of expertise and best practices, and promote research and innovation in healthcare. The signing of the MoU will further consolidate bilateral cooperation between Mauritius and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the health sector and support ongoing efforts to strengthen the country's health system and improve the delivery of healthcare services to the population.
