Minister of Land Transport reviews NTC operations with representatives and Unions

The Minister of Land Transport, Mr Osman Mahomed, chaired yesterday afternoon, a meeting with representatives of the National Transport Corporation (NTC) and Unions of NTC employees at the seat of the Ministry in Port Louis to discuss on the operations and functioning of the Corporation.

The meeting forms part of the continued dialogue between the Ministry, representatives of NTC as well as Unions to address operational, staffing and industrial relations issues. Discussions focused on fleet reliability and maintenance, recruitment, staff welfare, industrial relations, revenue monitoring, as well as the NTC’s transition towards electric buses.

With the objective of reinforcing its operational capacity, the NTC highlighted the recruitment of 85 additional employees, comprising mechanics, drivers, conductors, bus chargers and cleaners. It was further indicated that 43 workers have been transferred from casual to permanent employment within the Corporation.

In relation to staff welfare, the NTC confirmed arrangements for allocation of uniforms and footwear and raincoats to staff.

In line with the Corporation’s sustainability objectives, the Central Electricity Board will provide technical assistance to the NTC for the implementation of a photovoltaic project. This will complement the NTC’s planned transition towards electric buses and cleaner energy solutions.

The meeting also considered matters relating to fleet management, including the tender for 20 diesel buses, to strengthening fleet reliability and maintenance.

The Committee further requested the Traffic Manager of the NTC to submit, within one week, a technical report providing details of revenue collected across the Corporation’s five depots.
