Mrs Gajmotee Meetun celebrates 100th birthday

Mrs Gajmotee Meetun marked her 100th birthday on 07 September 2026 during a ceremony organised by the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity in Goodlands.

The Minister of Education and Human Resource, Dr Mahend Gungapersad; Members of Parliament, Mr Nitish Sharma Beejan and Mr Rameshwar Etwareea; and other distinguished guests were present to honour the centenarian.

On the occasion, Mrs Meetun was presented with a bouquet, a centenarian medal, a certificate, a rice cooker and a cheque of Rs 26,203 by the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity. She also received a cheque of Rs 10,000 from the National Solidarity Fund as well as gifts from the Senior Citizens Council.

Born to Mr Bhoodhun Mathoorah, a labourer, and Miss Beersing Nundeea, a housewife, Mrs Meetun grew up in Engrais Cathon in Eau Coule. She was one of five siblings and is the only surviving member of the family. She did not attend school and later married civilly Mr Deonarain Meetun at the age of 32. Her husband, who was also a labourer, passed away in September 2022 at the age of 98.

The couple had 12 children, six sons and six daughters. Mrs Meetun also worked as a labourer for various employers to contribute to the family’s livelihood.

A vegetarian, Mrs Meetun enjoys a variety of dishes, with ‘roti’ and ‘curry’ being her favourite. She particularly cherishes spending time talking with her children and enjoying the company of her grandchildren.

Despite her advanced age, Mrs Meetun has no major health issues apart from age-related debility. She retains good eyesight and hearing and moves around with the assistance of her family.

Mrs Meetun attributes her longevity to her unwavering faith in God, regular prayers, generosity and humility. Known for her kindness, she has always been willing to help others and would regularly provide food to people in need.

Mrs Meetun currently receives a Basic Retirement Pension of Rs 23,550, a Severely Handicapped Allowance of Rs 3,500, Income Support of Rs 353 and a Social Retirement Benefit of Rs 2,500 monthly from the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity.
