Mauritius and Maharashtra to Strengthen Cultural Ties
The Republic of Mauritius and the State of Maharashtra have agreed to strengthen cultural ties following a meeting held on 21 March 2026 in Port Louis between the Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Mahendra Gondeea, and the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party Maharashtra Unit, Shri Ravindra Chavan.
Discussions focused on enhancing collaboration in the arts and culture sector, while laying emphasis on the promotion and preservation of Marathi culture in Mauritius. Both parties explored avenues for deeper institutional cooperation, aimed at fostering cultural exchange and supporting artistic development.
During the meeting, Minister Gondeea highlighted the significant contribution of the Marathi community in shaping Mauritius’ cultural identity. He reiterated the Government’s commitment to safeguard and promote this rich heritage, ensuring its transmission to future generations.
Shri Chavan expressed willingness to support the Mauritian Marathi community, including facilitating access to traditional musical instruments from Maharashtra. This initiative is expected to contribute to the preservation of cultural traditions and to engage youth in artistic and cultural activities.
Both parties also reaffirmed their shared vision to further strengthen cooperation between Mauritius and Maharashtra in the cultural sector.
