Former Fisherman Mardaymootoo Mootoo celebrates 100th Birthday
Mr Mardaymootoo Mootoo, a former fisherman, celebrated his 100th birthday, yesterday afternoon, at the Multipurpose Hall in Petit Raffray. Born on 28 August 1926, he was honoured at a ceremony organised by the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity.
Among those present were the Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Dr Arvin Boolell; the Minister of Education and Human Resource, Dr Mahend Gungapersad; the Junior Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Mr Gilles Fabrice David; the Member of the National Assembly, Mr Nitish Beejan; and other personalities.
On the occasion, the Ministry presented Mr Mootoo with a cheque of Rs 26,203, a bouquet, a centenarian medal, a certificate and a smartphone. He also received a cheque of Rs 10,000 from the National Solidarity Fund, gifts from the Senior Citizens Council and a Special Telephone Service from Mauritius Telecom.
The eldest of eight children, the centenarian attended school up to Standard Four before taking up work as a fisherman, following in the footsteps of his father. His younger brother, now 80 years old, also worked as a fisherman before retiring. Both his parents have passed away, as have three of his brothers and three of his sisters.
Following his civil marriage to Mrs Amoordon Rungapen, Mr Mootoo moved to Cap Malheureux, where the couple lived until her death on 11 November 2006. They had nine children, and he is today the grandfather of 22 grandchildren.
Mr Mardaymootoo enjoys seafood, particularly ‘fish bouillon', as well as fresh fruits and sweets. In his leisure time, he listens to the radio, watches television and reads newspapers.
Despite experiencing age-related debility, Mr Mardaymootoo is able to walk around his premises and receives monthly domiciliary visits from the Medical Unit of the Ministry. He attributes his longevity to hard work, the support and care of his loved ones, and his faith in God.
