Activities to mark International Day for Preservation of Ozone Layer

A series of activities will be organised in Mauritius to mark the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer 2026, observed annually on 16 September to commemorate the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. This year’s theme is “Global action for a cooler planet”.

The activities, organised by the Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, will also commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Kigali Amendment.

The programme will focus on improving the enforcement and detection of illegal trade, equipping refrigeration and air-conditioning technicians with the skills required for the safe transition to low-GWP and natural refrigerants, and strengthening communication on ozone and climate-related issues.

The activities will include a workshop for media professionals and journalism students, radio talks and television programmes, training for refrigeration and air-conditioning technicians and customs officers, as well as a video competition for young people to encourage their engagement as future environmental ambassadors.
