Mauritius and India advance cooperation in rural development and infrastructure
Mauritius and India are exploring avenues to strengthen cooperation in rural development and infrastructure, with a particular focus on technical assistance, capacity building, exchange of expertise and the adoption of new technology.
This was at the fore of a meeting held yesterday between the Minister of National Infrastructure, Mr Govindranath Gunness, and the Deputy High Commissioner of India to Mauritius, Mrs Aparna Ganesan, in Port Louis.
Discussions focused on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on rural development in 2016 between the Government of Mauritius and Government of India. Signatories were the National Development Unit (NDU) on the Mauritian side and the Ministry of Rural Development of India.
Both sides exchanged views on practical measures to strengthen cooperation under the MoU and identified opportunities to enhance its implementation
In a statement, Minister Gunness described the meeting as fruitful and noted that the agreement had not made significant progress since its signing and stressed the importance of giving fresh impetus to the cooperation framework.
The Minister indicated that potential areas of cooperation include capacity-building programmes for engineers and technicians, the exchange of technical expertise and best practices, as well as training opportunities in India.
The use of new construction techniques for drainage systems to support flood management, as well as the potential application of artificial intelligence in infrastructure development, including road construction were also brought forth.
