Mauritius-France Cooperation to Strengthen Preservation of Architectural Heritage

The implementation of the Déclaration d’Intention Relative à une Coopération en matière de Préservation du Patrimoine Architectural Mauricien, signed in April 2025, is progressing with a focus on strengthening the preservation and valorisation of Mauritius’ architectural heritage.

The cooperation agreement brings together the Government of the Republic of Mauritius, the Government of the French Republic, Fondation Mansart, Business Mauritius and SOS Patrimoine en Péril “Save our Heritage”. Financed by the French Government, the initiative provides for the possible establishment of a dedicated public-private governance structure to oversee the rehabilitation, management and enhancement of heritage sites, as well as the review and development of a regulatory and fiscal incentive framework to encourage investment in heritage preservation.

The cooperation also provides for the mobilisation of French legal, institutional and technical expertise to support the reform of the National Heritage Fund. Pilot interventions are envisaged at three identified sites, namely the Old Supreme Court, the SSR Botanic Garden at Pamplemousses and the National History Museum in Mahébourg.
