Reopening of Mahebourg Creativity Centre
The Government’s vision of providing every child with an environment in which they can learn, express their creativity, play and participate in artistic activities, including music and other forms of cultural expression, was reiterated by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Marie Arianne Navarre-Marie, on Saturday 29 August 2026 in Mahebourg.
The Deputy Prime Minister was speaking at the reopening of the Mahebourg Creativity Centre and the launch of the Children’s Club in the presence of the Junior Minister, Mr Tony Apollon; the Member of Parliament, Mr Chitraduthsing Lukeeram; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mr Jean Daniel Philippe Labonne; the Chairperson of the Board of the National Children's Council, Mr Gilbert Daniel Mervin Louise, and other personalities.
In her address, Mrs Navarre-Marie expressed Government’s conviction that, through a wide range of activities, children can discover their talents and develop their social, intellectual, moral, physical and creative competencies. “Creativity is a necessity, not an option, and each child should be given the opportunity to develop their potential and contribute to society,” she stated.
The Deputy Prime Minister recalled that the Mahebourg Creativity Centre, which was donated by the Government of India, opened in 2000 and has been operating under the aegis of the National Children’s Council since 2001, providing activities for children. Following renovation and modernisation works, as well as the provision of new equipment, the Centre is now ready to host a range of activities. Schools, non-governmental organisations and community-based organisations will also be able to make use of its facilities for the benefit of children. “Today, the Centre is a more welcoming, modern and vibrant space, not only for children in the region but for children across the country,” she said.
According to Mrs Navarre-Marie, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, in collaboration with the National Children’s Council, is giving new impetus to Children’s Clubs. She underlined that existing clubs are being strengthened, while new ones were being launched across the country to bring creative and recreational activities closer to children and enable them to participate within their own communities. “Our commitment is to make the Club a platform for promoting children’s rights, inclusion and participation,” she stated.
