New Stroke Unit inaugurated at Sir Anerood Jugnauth Hospital

The new Stroke Unit at Sir Anerood Jugnauth Hospital in Flacq was officially inaugurated, this morning, by the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo, marking another milestone in Government’s drive to expand specialised stroke care across Mauritius.

The Member of the National Assembly, Mr Chandraprakash Ramkalawon, and other personalities were also present on the occasion.

Already operational, the Unit has so far treated five stroke patients, all of whom have successfully recovered and returned home.

The facility is the second of five dedicated Stroke Units being established across the country’s five main hospitals, following the opening of the first at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National Hospital. Three additional units are expected to become operational at the remaining main hospitals in the coming weeks.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Bachoo highlighted that around 4,000 people suffer a stroke in Mauritius each year, with some cases proving fatal and others resulting in long-term disabilities. He stressed the importance of timely treatment and reducing delays in accessing appropriate care, particularly in stroke cases where prompt medical intervention can be critical.

Minister Bachoo further explained that the dedicated units would cut patient transfer times between hospitals and enable specialised teams, available round the clock, to deliver immediate care. He underlined the need to expand specialised services so that complex cases can be managed more effectively, while keeping waiting times to a minimum as the remaining Stroke Units become operational.
