Bois Rouge Sports Complex inaugurated to promote sports and community development
A new sports complex comprising a football ground and a pétanque court was inaugurated yesterday in Bois Rouge, with the aim of promoting sports, physical activity and community development in the region.
The inauguration ceremony was held in the presence of the Minister of Local Government, Mr Ranjiv Woochit; Member of the National Assembly Mr Kaviraj Rookny; Junior Minister of Tourism; Mrs Marie Anabelle Andelana Savabaddy; Chairperson of the Pamplemousses District Council Mr Vedanand Totoo; and Managing Director of Terragri Ltd, Mr Nicolas Maigrot.
The new facility will provide residents, particularly children and young people, with improved access to sports infrastructure and a suitable environment for recreational and sporting activities. The project is the result of a joint collaboration between the Ministry of Local Government and Terragri Ltd.
In his address, Minister Woochit highlighted the importance of providing communities with adequate sporting infrastructure. Such facilities, he observed, not only encourage physical activity but also create opportunities for social interaction, teamwork and community engagement. He also called on local authorities to organise more activities for residents highlighting the key role of District Councils in promoting development at the local level, particularly in the fields of finance, infrastructure, health and wellness, and sports.
He further indicated that a Bill relating to the Land Drainage Authority and the Road Development Authority, aimed at bringing the relevant permits onto the National Electronic Licensing System of Mauritius, will shortly be introduced in the National Assembly. The objective, he said, is to ensure that permits are delivered within the shortest possible time.
Addressing the issue of the drug scourge, Minister Woochit underscored the important role of the National Agency for Drug Control in combating drug trafficking and substance abuse. He pointed out that some Rs 50 million has been allocated in the Budget to tackle the problem.
Against this backdrop, he called on the public, particularly young people, to take a more active part in sports and embrace healthier lifestyles. He emphasised that sporting activities can help foster positive values, promote well-being and keep young people away from harmful substances.
For his part, Mr Rookny called on local authorities to ensure the proper maintenance of the infrastructure and urged inhabitants, particularly the youth, to make full use of the dedicated sports facilities. He also highlighted the importance of fostering a sporting culture as a means of keeping young people away from the drug scourge.
As for Mr Totoo, he dwelt on the importance of public-private partnerships in supporting the country’s development. He expressed his appreciation to Terragri Ltd for its contribution to the project and indicated that the sports complex would be further developed in the future to include additional facilities.
