MoU signed to enhance advanced surgery and medical capacity building

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed, yesterday, in Ebène, between the Ministry of Health and Wellness and two leading Indian healthcare institutions, CK Birla Hospital, Gurgaon, and the Calcutta Medical Research Institute, Kolkata.

The MoU aims to strengthen collaboration in specialised healthcare through capacity building, technical assistance and medical cooperation, with particular emphasis on onco-surgery, neurosurgery, cardiac electrophysiology and robotic surgery.

The Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo; the Senior Chief Executive of the Ministry, Mr Parmanand Mawah; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Asha Devi Seenundun; the Acting Director General Health Services, Dr Vishwas Teelucksingh Mohabeer; the Chief Executive Officer of CK Birla Group, Mr Vipul Jain; as well as other representatives of the Group were present at the signing ceremony.

In a statement, Minister Bachoo highlighted that this was the 11th MoU signed by Mauritius with renowned Indian hospitals in the field of specialised medical care over the past 18 months. He noted that Indian specialists regularly visited Mauritius to attend to complex cases and perform specialised surgeries, adding that around 100 doctors had visited the country since January 2025.

The Minister stated that the CK Birla Hospital was a leading multi-speciality healthcare institution in India, with expertise in advanced surgical infrastructure, robotic surgery, cancer treatment and critical care. He pointed out that the incidence of cancer was increasing rapidly in Mauritius and said that the MoU would enable Government to send more patients to India for treatment.

As for the Chief Executive Officer of CK Birla Group, he expressed his enthusiasm to collaborate with the Government of Mauritius and support joint capacity-building initiatives for doctors and nurses. He noted that he had visited the cancer hospital in Mauritius and described its infrastructure and technology as excellent.

Mr Jain further highlighted CK Birla Hospital's extensive experience in robotic surgery, noting that the technique was less painful, facilitated faster recovery and enabled patients to return to their normal activities sooner. He expressed hope that Mauritius would further advance in robotic surgery and reaffirmed the commitment of the Group to support and train Mauritian doctors in this field. He added that Indian doctors and support staff could also visit Mauritius to provide treatment and assistance in complex cases, thereby reducing the need for patients to travel to India.
