New Grove Native Mrs Kossilla Ramkhalawan Celebrated at 100

Mrs Kossilla Ramkhalawan marked a remarkable milestone yesterday as she celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends at the seat of the Sugar Industry Labour Welfare Fund in Grand Bassin. Born in New Grove on 15 August 1926, the new centenarian was honoured at an official ceremony organised by the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity.

To commemorate the occasion, Mrs Ramkhalawan received a cheque of Rs 26,203 from the authorities and a further Rs 10,000 from the National Solidarity Fund, along with a bouquet, a centenarian medal, a certificate, a rice cooker and other gifts.

The Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Dr Arvin Boolell; the Junior Minister of Health and Wellness, Mrs Anishta Babooram; Members of Parliament, Messrs Manoj Seeburn and Ashley Ramdass; as well as other personalities were also present on the occasion.

Mrs Kossilla Ramkhalawan was born and raised in New Grove and spent her working years as a sugar cane and tea planter. She was religiously married to Mr Manilall Moonien, a labourer, with whom she lived first at Union Park before the couple settled in New Grove.

Following the demise of her husband, Mrs Ramkhalawan moved to Nouvelle France to live with her daughter, where she has resided for the past 45 years. She is surrounded by four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Fond of Mauritian cuisine, particularly fish and prawn curry, Mrs Ramkhalawan also enjoys watching Hindi serials on television. The centenarian attributes her longevity to hard work, a hygienic lifestyle and an unwavering faith in God.
