Shift to Clean Energy: 200 Families Receive Ownership of PV Kits
Two hundred beneficiaries of the Home Solar Project (HSP) have officially become owners of their photovoltaic solar kits following the transfer of ownership by the Central Electricity Board (CEB), yesterday, during a ceremony at its Head Office in Ebène Cybercity.
Held in the presence of the Minister of Energy and Public Utilities, Mr Patrick Gervais Assirvaden, the ceremony marked a milestone in the rollout of the project, which is benefiting 1,000 families across Mauritius.
With the completion of the ownership formalities, the 200 beneficiaries now have full ownership of their photovoltaic solar kits. The remaining 800 beneficiaries under Phase 1 are expected to receive their ownership certificates in due course.
The HSP is a clean and green initiative of the CEB and forms part of the measures announced in the 2026–2027 Budget to promote the use of renewable energy at household level and encourage greater participation in the country’s transition towards cleaner and more sustainable sources of energy.
The project also brings tangible financial benefits to participating households by helping to reduce their electricity bills. When operating efficiently, the photovoltaic systems can generate monthly savings of around Rs 580, while allowing households to meet part of their electricity needs through solar energy and reducing their exposure to increases in electricity charges.
Beyond these savings, the HSP contributes to wider environmental objectives by promoting greater use of Mauritius’ abundant solar resource.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Assirvaden stressed the need to accelerate Mauritius’ transition to renewable energy to strengthen the country’s energy security, particularly given its dependence on imported fossil fuels and the uncertainties affecting international energy markets.
The HSP, he noted, reflects Government’s broader vision of placing households at the centre of the energy transition by enabling families to generate part of their own electricity. This, he observed, can help reduce their exposure to fluctuations in electricity costs while contributing to a more resilient national electricity system.
Minister Assirvaden also drew attention to the large-scale deployment of rooftop solar in Gujarat, following his recent visit to India, noting that its experience could offer valuable lessons for Mauritius in expanding household solar generation. He called for greater support and cooperation to accelerate the rollout of solar energy locally and indicated that, during his visit, he had sought assistance for Mauritius, including a request for 100,000 solar panels to further advance the country’s household solar programme.
Moreover, the Minister highlighted Government’s ambition to significantly increase the contribution of clean energy to the national electricity mix, with Mauritius targeting 65% of its electricity generation from renewable and clean energy sources by 2035.
For his part, the Director-General of CEB, Mr Shamshir Mukoon, congratulated the beneficiaries and highlighted the significance of the ownership transfer, describing the HSP as an important step towards making renewable energy more accessible to households.
He highlighted the opportunity for families to harness Mauritius’ abundant solar resource while contributing to the broader drive towards a cleaner, greener and more sustainable energy sector.
