New Wetlands Bill to Enhance Conservation of Wetlands

The Wetlands Bill, which aims to strengthen the protection, conservation and enhancement of wetlands and their ecosystem services, will be introduced into the National Assembly following Cabinet approval.

The proposed legislation will establish a comprehensive framework for the creation, conservation, protection and enhancement of the ecological character of all wetlands on both State-owned and privately-owned lands across the Republic of Mauritius. It will also provide for the identification of wetlands and the establishment of management objectives to safeguard their ecosystem services and biodiversity.

Furthermore, the Bill will set out the legal framework for the listing of wetlands under the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention), while ensuring the protection, conservation and enhancement of other wetlands throughout the country, irrespective of land ownership.

The legislation will promote the integration of ecosystem-based approaches into wetland management to strengthen disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. It will also provide a framework to support consistent, equitable and informed decision-making on matters relating to wetlands.

In addition, the Bill will make provision for the monitoring and regular reporting on the condition of wetlands across the Republic of Mauritius.
