Mechanisms established to advance Disability Rights agenda
Government is advancing the implementation of the 73 recommendations made by the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) following the review of Mauritius' combined second and third periodic reports, with a series of institutional mechanisms established to ensure coordinated action.
An Inter-Ministerial Committee, set up in November 2026 under the chairmanship of the Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, has been entrusted with overseeing, coordinating and monitoring the effective implementation of the recommendations.
Its key priorities include the formulation of a National Strategy and Action Plan on Disability 2026–2030; the recommendation of constitutional amendments; and the consideration of adherence to the Optional Protocol(s) to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
To further strengthen implementation, a Steering Committee has also been established in line with Article 33 of the UNCRPD. In addition, ten Thematic Sub-Committees, led by the relevant Ministries and Departments, will facilitate technical discussions, coordinate actions among stakeholders and monitor progress in implementing the Convention's recommendations.
