Mauritius to strengthen climate action through National Carbon Market Framework
With a view to supporting Mauritius’ transition to a low-carbon economy and strengthening its participation in international carbon markets, the Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change will sign a Protocole d’Accord de Subvention with the Institut de La Francophonie pour Le Développement Durable, a subsidiary body of the Organisation Internationale de La Francophonie, for the development of a National Carbon Market Framework and Regulations.
As a Party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Mauritius remains committed to implementing the Paris Agreement and ensuring that all carbon market activities comply with rigorous international standards.
The proposed framework will establish the institutional and regulatory arrangements required for participation in Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, while providing a clear legal basis for carbon market trading, project approval and the authorisation of mitigation outcomes.
The initiative will also provide for the establishment of a national registry system aligned with the requirements of the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. In addition, it will introduce robust safeguards to prevent double counting, strengthen regulatory oversight to ensure environmental integrity, transparency and alignment with national priorities, and support the implementation of a capacity-building programme to enhance national expertise in Article 6 participation and the effective implementation of the Carbon Market Framework.
