Mauritius Accelerates Renewable Energy with new Household Rooftop Solar PV Scheme

The Household Rooftop Solar PV Scheme under which eligible households will benefit from 25% of the cost of a Solar PV System up to maximum of Rs75,000, was launched by the Minister of Energy and Public Utilities, Mr Patrick Assirvaden on Saturday, 25 July 2026, during a ceremony held at the Central Electricity Board (CEB) Station in Curepipe.

The Junior Minister of Finance, Mr Dhaneshwar Damry, the Chief Executive Officer of the Development Bank of Mauritius Ltd, Mr Hemraj Rubee and the General Manager of the CEB, Mr Shamshir Mukoon, were also present on the occasion.

The project represents a major collaborative effort between the Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities, the Central Electricity Board (CEB), and the Development Bank of Mauritius (DBM).

The purpose of the scheme is to enable the acquisition of a Solar PV system of either up to 3.5kW with or without battery or greater than 3.5kW with battery, by households, under the CEB Solar Photovoltaic Scheme (Households) 2026. The Household Rooftop Solar PV Grant Scheme will be operated by the Development Bank of Mauritius Ltd on behalf of the Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities.

In his keynote address, Minister Patrick Gervais Assirvaden underlined that this landmark initiative is designed to empower citizens to generate their own clean electricity using solar energy, accelerating the Nation's transition toward sustainable energy independence. He recalled that the Grant Scheme will be funded from the Climate Sustainability Fund to the tune of Rs270M provided in Budget 2026-2027.

The Minister stated that the revamped Scheme will provide additional incentives for upscaling and accelerating households’ investment in solar photovoltaic installations, enabling households to achieve a level energy autonomy and security.

He stressed that Government is resolved to invest massively in renewable energies, a strategy serving as a critical buffer against global price volatility caused by ongoing international geopolitical tensions. "We must continuously intensify our efforts to build a resilient, energy-secure Mauritius," the Minister stated, adding that this initiative aligns directly with our national strategic mandate to achieve a 60 percent renewable energy share by 2035.

Furthermore, Mr Patrick Gervais Assirvaden highlighted several key initiatives aimed at strengthening the national electrical grid. These include strategic collaborations with allied nations, the development of a floating solar PV farm, and the expansion of the Agrivoltaics Scheme. Additionally, the Ministry is rolling out national energy efficiency awareness campaigns designed to integrate sustainable energy practices into the daily lives of the community, he added.

As for the Junior Minister, Mr Dhaneshwar Damry, he highlighted that Government remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that public investments directly benefit every citizen. He affirmed that strategic investments in renewable energy serve a dual purpose: driving national economic development while tangible improving the everyday lives of Mauritians.

Elaborating on the Household Rooftop Solar PV Scheme, the Junior Minister noted that the initiative empowers families to lower their monthly electricity bills, which directly increases household purchasing power, elevates living standards, and fosters resilient economic growth. Mr Damry concluded that such forward-looking programs stimulate local wealth creation, allowing the Government to reinvest in vital economic pillars and strengthen the overall welfare of the population.
