Centenarian Mrs Marie Marthe Elizabeth René Celebrates a Century of Faith and Family
Born on 20 July 1926, Mrs Marie Marthe Elizabeth René officially joined the elite group of centenarians in Mauritius upon attaining the age of 100 on 20 July 2026. She celebrated the milestone on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, at the Plaza in Rose Hill, surrounded by her family and loved ones.
The special celebration was graced by the Junior Minister of Tourism, Mr Jean Sydney Pierre. To honour her longevity, the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security, and National Solidarity presented Mrs René with a check of Rs 26,203, a bouquet of flowers, a centenarian medal, a certificate, a blender, and an iron. She also received a special gift from the Senior Citizens Council, a cash gift of Rs 10,000 from the National Solidarity Fund, and a mobile phone courtesy of Mauritius Telecom.
Born in Saint Pierre, Mrs René (née Précieux) is the daughter of Mr Camille Précieux, a labourer, and Mrs Marie Alicia Capiron, a homemaker. She pursued her education up to Standard VI.
In April 1953, she married Mr André Julien René, a mechanic employed at the Rose Belle Sugar Estate. He passed away in April 2013 at the age of 87. A devoted homemaker, Mrs René dedicated her life to caring for her home and family. Over the years, she also enjoyed travelling and had the opportunity to visit Australia, Germany and Rodrigues.
Today, the centenarian is the proud matriarch of a large family, with 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She believes that her remarkable longevity is the result of her unwavering faith in God and a lifetime of regular prayer.
