Vision 2050 charts long-term pathway for a resilient and inclusive Mauritius, says Minister Jeetun

“Vision 2050 is not simply a strategy, it is a long-term commitment to building a resilient, prosperous, and inclusive Mauritius for future generations”, stated the Minister of Financial Services and Economic Planning, Dr Jyoti Jeetun, this morning at the Sir Harilall Vaghjee Memorial Hall in Port-Louis.

She was speaking at the opening of a Validation Workshop which brought together key stakeholders and development partners to review and discuss the draft Vision 2050 report for Mauritius. The final report is expected to be released in August.

In her address, Minister Jeetun recalled that the Vision 2050 national consultations launched by the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam in December last year were ongoing for six months. She described it as one of the most inclusive policy development exercises ever undertaken in Mauritius, comprising 13 regional consultations with more than 1,000 participants from Mauritius and Rodrigues.

According to her, the broad-based consultative process has helped shape a shared vision that better reflects the aspirations and priorities of citizens. She stressed that Vision 2050 is about looking beyond immediate challenges to define the country Mauritius aspires to become. "Without long-term planning, we risk reacting to crises instead of preparing for them," she said.

Dr Jeetun observed that country faces numerous challenges including energy security, water resources, demographic change, and pension sustainability. She deplored that these challenges were foreseeable but insufficiently planned for. Vision 2050, she stressed, provides an opportunity to anticipate future challenges, strengthen national resilience, and establish a clear long-term development pathway.

She underscored the importance of enhancing the country’s preparedness while stressing that implementation and execution of the findings would be crucial to ensure that Mauritius is on right development path.

On the occasion, the Chief Economist at the Ministry of Financial Services and Economic Planning, Dr Vimal Thakoor, presented the key findings from the regional and thematic consultations. The presentation highlighted the sectoral drivers of long-term economic growth and the enablers of prosperity, sustainability, and inclusivity.
