Minister Boolell provides update regarding cattle from Mozambique
The Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Dr Arvin Boolell, held a press conference today in Port-Louis regarding the cattle from Mozambique so as to provide an update on the current situation. The Junior Minister, Mr Fabrice David and the Senior Chief Executive of the Ministry, Mrs Marie Anne Janick Jaunbocus, were also present.
Minister Boolell underlined that Government had to make an exceptional decision to authorise the entry of cattle brought by the vessel LSS Success Apex and intended to Ubora Ventures, for strict quarantine. The cattle, which originated from Mozambique, were redirected to Mauritius after a Guinean importer abruptly cancelled the original order.
He emphasised that Government had to act promptly in line with the respect and welfare of animals by sending them to quarantine in accordance to health and phytosanitary measures. This decision, he stressed, was taken to minimise any risks to public and animal health while ensuring the humane treatment of the animals.
The Minister further informed that sanitary inspectors and veterinary officers from the Ministry of Health and Wellness boarded the vessel to conduct an initial inspection, and further monitoring will continue throughout the quarantine period. According to preliminary assessments, the cattle show no signs of carrying infectious diseases, although they are fatigued, hungry and weak after the prolonged voyage.
He pointed out that the animals were transported in specialised livestock trucks in compliance with sanitary, phytosanitary and biosecurity requirements. The cattle will undergo comprehensive blood testing, with samples to be sent to an internationally renowned laboratory in Pretoria for analysis. The appropriate course of action will be determined once the laboratory results are received, he added.
