National Task Force set up for the Management and Control of Stray Animals
A National Task Force will be set up under the chair of the Senior Chief Executive of the Ministry of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, and will bring together key stakeholders to find ethical and sustainable ways to tackle issues regarding the management and control of stray animals for a greater outreach. The Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Dr Arvin Boolell, made this statement today at the Municipal City Council of Port Louis during a Consultative Meeting he had with relevant stakeholders on the control of stray dogs. The Junior Minister, Mr Fabrice David; the Lord Mayor, Mr Aslam Adam Hosenally; representatives of various Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs); as well as stakeholders and public authorities concerned were present. Minister Boolell appealed to concerned stakeholders to work in close collaboration so as to adopt an ethical and sustainable approach to the issue of stray animals in the country. He pointed out that the Mauritius Society for Animal Welfare (MSAW) cannot act alone and needs the support of trustworthy and reliable partners since the issue of stray dogs is acute and chronic. He informed that the possibility of enlisting the services of those who have successfully tackle the issue of stray dogs in Bhutan, Netherlands and Canada will be considered. However, the priority remains the allocation of adequate resources to MSAW and reliable NGOs locally, he stated. The Minister moreover reminded that projects in the pipeline comprise the construction of a hospital for animals with the support of the Indian Government, as well as an animal shelter in Richelieu where two arpents of land have already been identified.
