Mauritius welcomes a new centenarian, Miss Caleendee Narain

A new centenarian, Miss Caleendee Narain, celebrated her 100th anniversary among friends and family members, during a ceremony organised by the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, yesterday at her residence in Tyack.

The Member of the National Assembly, Dr Rubna Begum Daureeawo, and other personalities were among the guests present.

On this occasion, Miss Narain was honoured with tokens of appreciation, including a cheque of Rs 26,203, a microwave, a bouquet, a centenarian medal, and a certificate. In addition, the National Solidarity Fund awarded her a cheque of Rs 10,000 and Mauritius Telecom offered her a Special Telephone Service. The Senior Citizens Council paid tribute to her longevity with a special commemorative gift.

The centenarian, also known as Calo, was born on 09 July 1926 at Beau Bois and grew up in Tyack. Her father, Mr Hurrybajan Narain, was a sugar cane labourer working for no fixed employer and her mother Mrs Rookmeen Dookhun was a homemaker. The couple begot 2 children namely one son and one daughter.

Miss Narain worked as labourer at Beau Bois Sugar Estate. She maintains a healthy diet, ensures proper sleep and always finds the positive side of any situation.

She has no major health issues and remains under regular medical supervision. She attributes her longevity to hard work, hygienic life style, and unconditional faith in God.
