Minister Gondeea visits National History Museum ahead of rehabilitation works
The National History Museum in Mahébourg is set to undergo a major transformation following the Budget 2026-2027 measure providing for its complete rehabilitation. The project, which will be financed through proceeds from the National Lottery, represents an investment of Rs 100 million aimed at preserving and enhancing this important heritage site.
In this context, the Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Mahendra Gondeea, conducted a site visit, yesterday, at the Museum, accompanied by Members of the National Assembly, Messrs Gilbert Tony Apollon and Chitraduthsing Luckeeram, as well as representatives of the Mauritius Museum Council and the National Heritage Trust Fund.
The visit formed part of a comprehensive assessment exercise ahead of the launching of the bidding process for the rehabilitation works. During the visit, different sections of the building were inspected to identify the required interventions and finalise the scope of the rehabilitation project.
In a statement, Minister Gondeea emphasised that the rehabilitation of the National History Museum is a project to which Government is fully committed, given its importance in preserving a significant chapter of Mauritius’ history. He noted that the Museum has been neglected for too long and requires major improvements to restore its value, enhance its facilities, and provide the people of Mauritius with a museum they can be proud of while safeguarding the country’s rich heritage for future generations.
